Dev Log #3 Play Test and Next Steps

Title: Consider It!

Play Testing Round 1: On May 10th, 2022. We playtested our game with two groups of classmates. These are the pieces and game board used on the test:

Players were given a persona booklet and a car as their game piece. Each persona had a predetermined amount of points (50 total) divided amongst the 5 categories of social determinants based on their living situation. The maximum number of points is 100(20 points in each category). They then rolled the dice to determine the number of spaces moved. The spaces were blank ( no action), hearts (a chance to earn points)player, chance ( an event which generally deducted points)  or Consider It spots which r gives a discussion prompt. The player who acquires the most health points at the end wins.

Insights:

  • We realized there needs to be some action on every space to keep the play active.
  • Players suggested maybe chips instead of scorecards to keep track of points. If so, do we need to scale down the number of points?
  • Players wanted spaces where choices could be made.
  • Players suggested each section of the board have a theme where choice cards and consider it card would focus on a specific social determinant of health. Something like this:

  • We need to familiarize the players with the determinants. Maybe we make the first space a consider this and have the explanation begin the game.
  •   Review the definitions and factors of each determinant. Consider It?: Connect one determinant to an aspect of your player's profile.

To do list for next phase:

  • Create more heart and chance cards
  • Create choice cards
  • We need to change our wheel and symbols to avoid copyright issues?
  • Make sure colors and symbols are consistent throughout.

Design Decisions:

How should we create profile cards? With uniform sections or story-style, paragraph form?

Should “consider this” questions include answer examples (i.e. real life resource or researched strategy)?
